I woke with a start, startled by a loud banging sound from downstairs. The floor shook from the vibrations, causing me to sit upright in my bed and glance towards my bedroom door. What in the hell, was going on down there? My question was quickly answered, by another loud bang, followed by the yelling and shouting of my parents. I sighed, rolled my eyes and fell back against the mattress again. They were always fighting lately; it was no surprise to me, anymore.
I lay there for a few minutes, listening to the shouting match and piecing together the details, of what they were fighting about this time. The usual, from what I could tell.
Dad had been caught cheating on Jennifer again, for like the third time in the last year and a half; again, that was no surprise. I hated him for what he was doing to Jennifer...she didn't deserve it. Jennifer had been in my life for ten years, acting as my step-mother and she had always been a great person. She could be very strict and sometimes, a bit bossy.
I knew she had the best interests in mind, for me though.
Let me explain...
My real mother walked out on me and my father, when I was only a few years old. From that point, until I was about ten, my dad raised me all on his own. When he met Jennifer, they hit it off instantly and started dating. It was only a few short months before Jennifer had moved in with us and they were planning their wedding.
Dad was about twelve years older then she was, making him 35-years old and Jennifer 23-years old, when they first got together. Age wasn't the only thing against the two of them, though I wouldn't find out about Jennifer's other secrets until later.
I forced myself out of bed and stumbled out of my room, heading down the hallway and towards the bathroom. I could still hear dad and Jennifer arguing downstairs, and things seemed to be heating up and getting much more intense. I was use to it by now...but that didn't mean, that I wasn't concerned. Jennifer sounded really pissed off this time, not that I could blame her.
